    Share |

So you want to cook like a pro, but can you prep like a pro? If you’re kitting out your kitchen for the first time or want to invest in some new tools, the myriad of knives available can be overwhelming. Where on earth do you start?

Knives can really make a difference not only to your cooking, but your enjoyment of the preparation and cooking process - after all, who wants to be slogging over tough vegetables all day? The right knife will make slicing and dicing a piece of cake.

No matter which type of knives you choose to purchase, the qualities you look for in each should be the same. Of course, it goes without saying that the knives should be sharp, cut with ease and be comfortable to hold. An expensive knife won't automatically make you work at the speed of a Japanese sushi chef but a good knife will make the task much less labour intensive. Here are the essential knives everyone should have in the kitchen.

    Paring knife

A small knife with a sharp, short blade, used for precision tasks like peeling and trimming fruits and vegetables. Because of its size, the paring knife is quick to manipulate in your hand, making for an easier time when dealing with delicate tasks like segmenting.

    Chef's knife

The multi-purpose 8" or 10" chef's knife is used for slicing, dicing, chopping, and mincing. It's built to tackle hard veg like squash, prepare meat, as well as finely chop herbs or other vegetables. Whatever size or version you go for, the most important thing to note is that this one should be sharpened frequently!

    Serrated bread knife

It's the only knife that will break apart crusty baguettes without ruining the inside texture. Also great for slicing tomatoes and other thin-skinned fruits like nectarines and peaches, levelling cakes and making gorgeous chocolate shavings!
